Hereward Show 2026 Preview #27

Hereward the Wake’s Raid on Peterborough Abbey (Peterborough Wargames Club)
Pillage | Dark Ages | 28mm scale

In this game, using the Pillage Ruleset, we combine both history and myth to allow players to conduct Hereward’s raid on Peterborough Abbey to reclaim its treasures and relics for the Saxons of England. For the purposes of the game, we will use a “What If” proposition to make it more challenging and exciting.

The Scenario

On the night of the 2nd June in The Year of Our Lord 1070 the Saxon rebel known as Hereward the Wake leads a small force of loyal Saxon and allied Danish Warriors in a raid on Peterborough Abbey to reclaim the treasures and relics within before the newly appointed Abbot Turold of Fécamp can arrive and claim them for the Normans. A small force of Norman warriors has already made camp in the Abbey prior to Turold’s arrival which is expected on June 3rd.

Hereward is aware of the small occupying force but expects to be able to surprise and overwhelm them quickly having sailed up the Nene and approached the Abbey from the riverbank.

Unbeknown to Hereward, Abbot Turold of Fécamp has received word of the raid and is currently racing from Lincoln with a retinue of knights to try and prevent Hereward from being successful. Can Hereward successfully reclaim the treasures and relics and escape before Abbott Turold arrives or will Abbot Turold manage to capture/kill Hereward and put an end to his rebellion?
