The Steve Frisby Memorial Trophy

IMG_5723Steve was a founding member of our club, who passed away at the beginning of 2015 after a battle with cancer. The club have inherited a number of his tournament trophies from a very successful career playing DBR and Warhammer, and we have chosen to repurpose these in Steve’s memory as an award at Hereward Wargames Show.

The trophy is awarded annually to the best game in the show, as decided by the club’s committee and members: our criteria tend to be that the winner is a gIMG_4728ame we think Steve would have enjoyed, and that we as a club wish we’d have come up with!

Last year’s winners were the Huntingdon club, for their delightfully wacky “Catch the Pigeon” game.

Ticketing issues

As some of you may have noticed, we’ve had a couple of teething problems with our new payment and ticketing solution.

  • On occasions, trying to pay for a tournament entry or advance ticket gives an error from Paypal: in this case we have a record of your attempted payment in our database, and we’ll have that list at reception on the day, where you can pay cash (and obviously we’ll honour the price you would have paid). Expect an email from us later today confirming this if you fall into this category.
    • This issue has, to the best of our knowledge, now been fixed, and all affected customers contacted.
  • If your email is hosted by or, it appears that they are rejecting some of our mail from, so you may not have received confirmation emails or ticket links. We’ve raised this with Microsoft support and taken some steps we believe will fix this. In the meantime, we’ll send you your ticket PDF via another account later today.
  • Some of the tournament tickets have printed without a barcode. We have now fixed this, and if you re-download it now from the link in your confirmation email it will have one. We’ll still honour the mis-formatted ones, but having the barcode makes it easier for us checking you in at registration.

Please accept our apologies for these issues: we appreciate they are as frustrating for you as they are for us. They’re an unfortunate consquence of us ironing out the kinks to what’s actually a much better ticketing system. We are continually striving to make Hereward a better show year on year, and these issues are already in our list of things to improve (and test thoroughly) for next year.

Getting to and around the Cresset

So you’re clutching your freshly printed advance ticket in hand (see what I did there?) and wondering how to get to the show.

First off, let me direct you to the Directions page, which should answer most of your questions. There will be ample signage, as well. But, to reiterate what that page says, if you end up in the car-park opposite Sainsbury’s, a) you’re at the wrong end of the Cresset complex, b) car-parking is not free after two hours, and c) the door under the ‘Cresset’ sign is shut on Sundays. Walk or drive down the right hand side of that building and you should find signs to the show, as well as ample free parking.

Within the Cresset, all our traders and games are on the ground floor, which is all on one, step-free level (barring the low steps up to the stage which holds the tabletop sale tables). The tournaments are upstairs in the Fitzwilliam Suite, reachable by stairs opposite our registration desk. If you or someone you’re with needs elevator access to the tournament area, please ask at registration, and we’ll get the duty manager to come and help you – there is a lift, but it’s a bit easy to get lost and you’ll need his passcard!

Tabletop Sale

Some of you have probably seen this on our site and gone ‘what’?

As per last year, we have elected not to run a bring-and-buy sale, but instead provide table space for people to book for an hour to sell their unwanted stuff. It’s an idea we borrowed from the good folks at Hammerhead (among other places), and in general shows seem to have found that it reduces admin overhead (and also theft).

We have four tables in each one hour slot, starting on the half hour at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, and 1:30. You’ll find the tables at the far left as you enter, up on the low stage. Bring your cash (there’s an ATM outside the Cresset by the BP garage), and snap up some bargains from the folks who have already booked a slot. If you want to book, we still have two tables left in the 1:30-2:30 slot at the time of posting.

Gripping Beast figure

Harold_Hardradda_32265Thanks to our sponsors Gripping Beast, the firs 250 attendees at the show will each receive one of their gorgeous “Harold Hardradda, Viking Hero” 28mm figures (yours will be unpainted, though :D). Those who made it to the show last time will be able to add it to their Hereward The Wake figure from 2015, and we just might have a few of those left at the club’s Hereward game if you missed out last year.

We’ll be setting aside figures for folks who have paid for advance admission, whether on its own or as part of another ticket type, so to make sure, you might just want to book ahead 😀 (We’re sorry, but if you book and then don’t make it to the show, we can’t guarantee to save you one.)

Entry pages for all our tournaments are now up, including the Magic: The Gathering and X-Wing events. It’s definitely not too late to enter, and we can (at a pinch) accept entries on the day for most of the tournaments, but it’s much easier for us to plan room layouts and the like if we have a decent idea of numbers in advance.
